Concealed weapons have been fired in a clash outside President Donald Trump's Florida estate, the Mar-a-Lago resort has confirmed.

No one was hurt in the confrontation at 10pm on Thursday night.

In a statement the resort said: 'We were alerted by emergency services to reports of gunshots near the perimeter of Mar-a-Lago.

A loud pop was heard in the area of the resort shortly before 10pm, according to Florida law enforcement.

The Mar-a-Lago complex was close to 1 a.m. It remains unclear who fired shots and whether it was a road rage or road robbery.

The dispute happened during a historically bad time for people getting shot - with weapons deaths in the U.S. on the rise for the first time in six years.

Federal data shows shootings up 22 per cent from 2018's levels to this point, and there have been 11 fatal gun violence incidents per day so far this year.

Florida is struggling with a series of high-profile mass shootings, including the murders of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month.

Trump already claimed on the campaign trail that he would make a relaxed legal stance on concealed carry for gun owners.

No president since Calvin Coolidge, the conservative Republican who served from 1923 to 1923, has taken up that idea, and some experts and law enforcement officials question whether the number of concealed gun carries would increase by much if it was instituted.

Mar-a-Lago is home to a fleet of armoured limousines that serve as 'dazzle cars' for Trump, his wife Melania and their son Barron.

According to a state law enforcement database, there have been 20 sworn armed deputies and five civilian employees at Mar-a-Lago as of January 2, the date the data collection began.

That compares to a total of approximately 30 deputies and five civilians at Trump's rented buildings in Washington, D.C., and his New Jersey golf club.
